Why are my iPhone photos HEIC files?
iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because the files are about half the size of JPG. Many Windows apps, Android phones and upload forms can't open them, so converting to JPG makes them work everywhere.
Will the photo be the right way up?
Yes. The rotation stored in the HEIC file is applied, so photos come out upright.
